The First Edition of the Covid-19 Country Report was launched on 30 June 2022 at the Albert Luthuli Auditorium in Pretoria by Minister in the Presidency, Mondli Gungubele. GTAC’s head, Ms Ronette Engela, as well as Dr Beverley Damonse, Group Executive of the National Research Foundation welcomed the participants, after which Minister Gungubele launched the 700 page report. Dr Stephen Porter, an independent reviewer of the report reflected on its contribution, and there was ample time for the participants to discuss the content.

This official government report covers the first year of the pandemic. It records measures and interventions adopted by the South African government in partnership with its social partners to combat the spread of the virus and manage the negative socio-economic impact impacts of the pandemic. As News24 reported ‘Instead of spinning Covid-19 outcomes for ‘political gain’ this is what government needs to prioritise’. The report was well received and, as Dr Porter said, the report offers “a storyline and record” as well as “an almost real time assessment of government’s response to the pandemic”. Please take your time to study the report, which covers all dimensions of the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic.
