Description
A presentation delivered by Lindokuhle Hlatshwayo (Senior Project Advisor: Business Development, Tourism and ICT – PPP & TAS) on 24 June 2022 as part of GTAC’s weekly webinar series.
South Africa’s tourism industry has experienced considerable growth in the last decade, but despite the many opportunities that exist, the development of tourism-based businesses on state-owned land has been slow. National Treasury seeks to boost this strategic sector of the economy by providing practical guidelines in the form of a PPP Toolkit for Tourism. It makes the PPP process relevant to the particular characteristics of the country’s nature and heritage tourism industry. The Toolkit makes it easier for institutions and the private sector to enter into tourism-related partnerships on state property managed by national and provincial government institutions.
The webinar provided an overview of the application of the PPP Toolkit for Tourism in assisting Nature Conservation Institutions to solicit private sector involvement in development of ecotourism products. Lindokuhle discussed the institutional requirements, challenges and successes of optimal implementation.
