• 2014 StatsSA data states that 38% of the population is young people • While the South African Labour Force Survey for June 2014 indicates that 36.1% of young people are unemployed, therefor making the metric qualification of utmost importance to the broader citizenry to positively contribute to economic development • “South Africa loses half of every cohort that enters the school system by the end of the 12 year schooling period, wasting significant human potential and harming the life-chances of many young people” National Development Plan 2011 • In order to reduce the matric failure rate, the Department of Basic Education has introduced the matric second chance programme.
