Formal-Informal Economy Linkages

This paper offers a suite of linkages between formal and informal economic activity that need to be better appreciated. The first half of the paper outlines some background conceptual issues associated with emerging definitions of informality. The second half of the paper focuses on the experience of South Africa, where it is seen that most ‘informality’ is found in formal companies and not in informal firms.
