South Africa is in need of a fully functional public Medicine Regulatory Authority (MRA). Currently the Medicines Control Council (MCC) exists as a unit within the National Department of Health. The MCC oversees the manufacture, marketing, sale and distribution of medication in South Africa, as per the standards set out in the Medicines and Related Substances Amendment Bill, (Act 101 of 1965).
