A presentation delivered by Mr Antony Altbeker on 11 March 2022 as part of GTAC’s weekly webinar series. The theme was “Compensation Spending Trends And The Impact On Our Public Finances”. Antony spoke about how our budget documentation has emphasised repeatedly that SA’s public finances have been on a precipitous trajectory for a number of years. A key driver of this has been pressures generated by rapid growth in compensation spending over the past 15 years. While the Constitutional Court ruled in favour of government not to implement the third year of the 2018 wage agreement which will help moderate some of these pressures, challenges remain.
