How much of South Africa’s current labour market inefficiency can be traced back to apartheid‑era policy design. This webinar draws on new research from the Southern Africa – Towards Inclusive Economic Development (SA-TIED) programme, examining how historical labour market restrictions continue to shape the allocation of workers across firms, sectors, and locations. By linking detailed archival records of apartheid legislation with contemporary firm-level data, the paper provides new evidence on how past institutional constraints persist in today’s economy.
