Scenarios for the South African Economy: 2026-2030

Scenarios for the South African Economy: 2026–2030

What are the possible economic paths facing South Africa over the next five years. This webinar draws on new scenario analysis from the Bureau for Economic Research (BER), exploring alternative futures for the South African economy between 2026 and 2030. Using detailed economic modelling, the scenarios illustrate how different policy choices, implementation outcomes and external conditions could shape growth, employment and fiscal sustainability.

The analysis sets out three distinct trajectories—the Hadeda, Maribou and African Fish Eagle—ranging from continued lowgrowth stagnation to a highgrowth path driven by effective reform implementation. The scenarios highlight that South Africa’s economic challenge is not a lack of ideas, but the ability to execute reforms consistently and at scale.

Speaker Dr Roy Havemann, Senior Economist at the Bureau for Economic Research, will unpack:

  • The key assumptions behind each of the three economic scenarios,
  • What differentiates a highgrowth outcome from continued low performance,
  • The role of policy implementation, institutional capacity and external risks,
  • And what these scenarios imply for South Africa’s mediumterm economic prospects.
