Renewable Energy Value Chain
Renewable Energy Value Chains: Opportunities for South Africa’s Energy Transition
Climate change has become one of the defining challenges of our time, with South Africa already experiencing its effects through intensifying droughts, flooding and heatwaves. South Africa’s reliance on coal-fired power, international pressures, and climate commitments highlight the urgency needed for the country to rethink its energy model. Renewable energy offers a compelling solution: reducing emissions, improving energy security, and building long-term competitiveness. Thanks to the success of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, South Africa has grown its renewable capacity to 15 GW, with strong projections for further expansion. Yet despite this progress, the country’s participation in the renewable energy value chain remains concentrated in downstream deployment, while upstream and midstream segments remain dominated by imports.
In this insightful webinar featuring Mr Ulrich Terblanche, Expert Analyst: Renewable Energy at GreenCape, and Ms Lerato Monaisa, Analyst at GTAC, the structure, dynamics, and strategic importance of renewable energy value chains will be explored. Ms Monaisa will set the scene by unpacking global value chains for solar, wind, and battery storage technologies, discussing global production and price trends. Mr Terblanche will then shift the focus to South Africa, highlighting the country’s current energy landscape and projected growth. He will also discuss renewable energy component manufacturing, exploring the key drivers and identifying barriers.
What will the webinar cover?
- An overview of the global solar, wind, and battery storage value chains
- Key technologies, raw materials, and global supply dynamics
- South Africa’s current renewable energy investment opportunities and growth forecasts
- South Africa’s renewable energy market drivers and barriers
- Local renewable energy manufacturing drivers and barriers
Join us for this discussion on how South Africa can shift from being a technology taker to a value chain player, unlocking economic opportunity, enhancing energy resilience, and supporting a just transition to net-zero.
