Infrastructure Trends: A South African Perspective
Infrastructure Trends: A South African Perspective
The South African infrastructure landscape is at a critical juncture. On one side, there has been a historic underinvestment and inefficient delivery, resulting in over a decade of suboptimal infrastructure outcomes. On the other side, reforms to public infrastructure frameworks, institutions and processes are being advanced to correct course and mobilise private-sector finances and technical expertise at scale. Current trends highlight that investments remain sluggish, both in scale and the effectiveness with which the resources are deployed. Against the backdrop of government’s deliberate actions to accelerate the delivery of quality infrastructure to support stronger economic growth and strengthen service delivery, the outlook is encouraging. However, the outcomes are far from certain, and progress will depend on whether reforms translate to significant shifts in the quantity and quality of infrastructure spending.
Drawing on insights from the recently published Bi-Annual Infrastructure Trends Report, the Capital Projects Appraisal Unit will showcase the latest trends and developments in infrastructure investment and reflect on the opportunities that emerge from these.
