WEEKLY WEBINAR SERIES INVITATION: THE STATE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN ECONOMY 30 YEARS AFTER DEMOCRACY

August 2, 2024 @ 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm

Register here.

This week, our upcoming webinar provides a broad overview of the state of the South African economy 30 years after democracy. This session will discuss trends in poverty, inequality, and unemployment, with a focus on identifying the structural causes that underlie these issues. Drawing on some of his research from the Southern Africa – Towards Inclusive Economic Development (SA-TIED) programme  including, “Estimating the Impact of Pandemic Job Loss on Poverty in South Africa” and “Surviving in the Dark: The Mortality Effects of Reducing Rolling Blackouts,” Joshua Budlender will examine the impact of recent crises on economic well-being. A particular focus will be on the dysfunctional labour market, emphasising the need for fundamental restructuring of an economy where the legacy of apartheid still looms large.

Identifying particular problem areas suggests a role for targeted interventions to help achieve substantive economic freedom for all South Africans.

Come join us this Friday as Mr Joshua Budlender a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Southern Africa Labour and Development Research Unit (SALDRU) at the University of Cape Town examines the impact of recent crises on economic well-being with a particular focus on the dysfunctional labour market, emphasising the need for fundamental restructuring of an economy where the legacy of apartheid still looms large.

Hope to see you there!
